Our primary purpose for placing her in preschool was for her to socialize. As an only child, it is hard to expose her to children her age on a regular basis; preschool serves that purpose while introducing her to many skills she will need when she enters Kindergarten. As a teacher, I admit it is very hard to "pull in the reigns" and not play school all day with her:) I think I manage to have a good balance. My focus right now is on letter recognition and beginning phonics. She can identify all of the capital letters and the majority of the lower case letters. I don't push sounds too hard because she is learning so much from preschool and through songs and rhymes. I am actually beginning to teach her sight words, but that will be another post ;)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I introduce the letters in a specific sequence. I begin with the letters that look identical as capital and lowercase (i.e. Cc, Kk, Mm, Oo, Pp, Ss, Uu, Vv, Ww, Xx, Yy, Zz). I always introduce capital letters first. I like to introduce everything with a story. We use AlphaTales by Scholastic. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<center>
<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&npa=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=chrysalispubl-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&ref=ss_til&asins=0545067642" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;"></iframe></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">These cute little animal tales are a fun way to introduce each letter in context. They also come with reproducible mini-books that the child can keep and use to reread or circle the letter. Once we have read the story we focus on identifying the letter. The next two resources are FREEBIES! The first one is from <a href="http://www.childcareland.com/">www.childcareland.com</a> and it is a simple block letter with circles to be used for stickers or Do-a-Dot daubers. I use this one for stickers. You can use round Avery stickers or circular alphabet stickers. I purchased my alphabet stickers at The Dollar Tree. </span></center>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJTFcWMuaS5VTkkX_aS3gEOlC_s-V32HGdvNSJpUbCdqQI9t0JC8V_0e5hr7KiHbkIRexN8Os4NmnGFtLceCHOPtq7YaBaJI92haW7g9MHqQ6DozfNtK_BIVFIZawUJ_I588xVd7xZxP4/s1600/Letter+Sticker.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJTFcWMuaS5VTkkX_aS3gEOlC_s-V32HGdvNSJpUbCdqQI9t0JC8V_0e5hr7KiHbkIRexN8Os4NmnGFtLceCHOPtq7YaBaJI92haW7g9MHqQ6DozfNtK_BIVFIZawUJ_I588xVd7xZxP4/s1600/Letter+Sticker.png" height="320" width="288" /></a></div>
<br />
T<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: left;">he next thing we do is put all different stickers on a large blank letter to create a collage. I downloaded my large blank letter from a preschool curriculum we are using called </span><a href="http://www.motherhoodonadime.com/kids/gods-little-explorer-preschool-curriculum/" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: left;" target="_blank">God's Little Explorers</a><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: left;">. It is an awesome curriculum and I believe she has many things available for FREE! You can purchase the curriculum as one download if you prefer. However, you can find large letters all over the web. Our daughter loves doing this activity because she is obsessed with stickers right now:)</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW9OaDtWGdrwyTRAHRshVId9ZiO6INIBxtv0SKImNWgpEmxcuJMKrCMKgPp8eZUpAc6OiFBkb7fU9N3YSQYYvhXJCilCS-kfhjneYlCyQteqpSmu_IIsTDiBj7wStoY1xOMQ2dy_pa7e4/s1600/Letter+Collage.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW9OaDtWGdrwyTRAHRshVId9ZiO6INIBxtv0SKImNWgpEmxcuJMKrCMKgPp8eZUpAc6OiFBkb7fU9N3YSQYYvhXJCilCS-kfhjneYlCyQteqpSmu_IIsTDiBj7wStoY1xOMQ2dy_pa7e4/s1600/Letter+Collage.png" height="320" width="249" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: left;">Now comes fine motor work, but not writing/tracing. I may as well state here that I do not have our daughter trace letters at home. She receives Occupational Therapy and I do not want to push her and turn her off to writing by constantly reminding her to hold her pencil correctly. I expose her using more sensory experiences like the sandpaper letters, play-doh and writing in a salt box. She really enjoys Do-a-Dot and that is what we do with our Do-a-Dot page from www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Another terrific resource is Animal ABCs from <a href="http://www.1plus1plusequals1.com/">www.1plus1plusequals1.com</a>. These are just so cool and appealing to preschoolers!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Before we move on to the sound for the letter, I have our daughter do a page that I created to work on visual discrimination and differentiating between the capital and lower case of the letter. We also count how many of each and record it. I use a very easily readable print font at this stage. I am working on something for her with the letter being presented in a variety of fonts, but at this stage it is essential for her to have a strong foundation. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"> The rest of the resources are products from Teachers Pay Teacher. The first two were created by yours truly;) The one below is called Preschool Playlist. It depicts an MP3 player and has objects that have the beginning sound of a given letter. This is straightforward and simple on purpose. When introducing letters and sounds you do not want to bombard a learner ~ exposure is essential at the beginning. This is just good practice and allows for gradual release of responsibility. Before they can select which one is NOT the sound they must be proficient with words that HAVE the sound. If you are interested in checking out my product, just click on the picture below. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">My Initial Sounds Hole Punch cards are our daughter's favorite! I am thrilled she loves it because it targets hand strength, eye-hand coordination, and visual discrimination all while reinforcing letter recognition and beginning sounds! The learner has to identify the picture and say what the beginning sound is. Then he or she hole punches all of the letters for that sound. You can check it out by clicking the picture below.</span></div>

Honestly, EVERY product she has is a MVP in my book! Her products are creative and fun and appealing to young children. That being said, one of her most versatile products is her Alphabet Money.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Click on the picture of her product cover above to check out how she uses the Alphabet Money with her little girl. I like to use mine as positive reinforcement when working with a particular letter. In a <a href="http://toadallytots.blogspot.com/2013/04/c-is-for.html" target="_blank">previous post</a> I discussed how we use the money to "shop" for things that begin with a particular sound. As our daughter is mastering the letter she continues earn money with that letter. She can use it to "purchase" a little something from a treasure chest I have with trinkets from the dollar store. </span></div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyMtls4E4pwsO6aQWq00T7YLL14pqcCLL4bVLU8hxXai-W79_EU_DT415rgTWPiwLC9mld3PwXeNgxDNKEwf-w4OYrKktdXyRxSxJKOg2AMPEOiDGAThp4_ud-02j5Zp7iZalifboAPiU/s1600/Pivotal+Frame.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyMtls4E4pwsO6aQWq00T7YLL14pqcCLL4bVLU8hxXai-W79_EU_DT415rgTWPiwLC9mld3PwXeNgxDNKEwf-w4OYrKktdXyRxSxJKOg2AMPEOiDGAThp4_ud-02j5Zp7iZalifboAPiU/s1600/Pivotal+Frame.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">You may think that the answer is phonemic awareness; but this is not so. The most pivotal early literacy skill is Concept of Word. The National Reading Panel (2000) credits phonemic awareness as instrumental in the development of literacy skill. However, Morris (1993) demonstrated that Concept of Word <i>precedes</i> and may <i>facilitate</i> phonemic awareness! So what is Concept of Word? Gately (2004) defines it as "...a key early literacy skill, or concept, that matches the spoken and written word. The following skills are present when a reader has Concept of Word:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOqLcXy0foNcY-rTy3ev6civA2YGF25ckoAP9ZRxDyG1BKJ82sRj4IuiFLXAzT39NpGV_TVnSrFxsHHW1CF16PGWbSMROgZicwdQVVlM2vQh5YFz12yL7eZddR6RHPItPtXHGtVkMfR5Y/s1600/Concepts+of+Word.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOqLcXy0foNcY-rTy3ev6civA2YGF25ckoAP9ZRxDyG1BKJ82sRj4IuiFLXAzT39NpGV_TVnSrFxsHHW1CF16PGWbSMROgZicwdQVVlM2vQh5YFz12yL7eZddR6RHPItPtXHGtVkMfR5Y/s1600/Concepts+of+Word.png" width="285" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Most students achieve these milestones without any specialized instruction. However, students that do not attain Concept of Word are often placed in specialized programs that emphasize phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is essential, however, without Concept of Word, students are unlikely to make progress. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">What can be done to help students that do not demonstrate Concept of Word? Two very effective methods for intervention are <b>Repeated Reading</b> of predictable and leveled texts and <b>Rebus Reading</b>. Most of us in education are very familiar with Repeated Reading and use predictable leveled texts on a regular basis. These texts can easily be created by teachers and individualized to students' interests. Fountas and Pinnell (1999) suggest that print should be no more than one line per page. The text structure should be simple, repetitive, predictable, and natural. Gately (2004) emphasizes that teachers should "...take care that students successfully finger point when they read" as this will help learners "...establish concept of word and sharpen their focus and attention on print." </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Some of the most beloved picture books are predictable and lend themselves to repeated reading: <u>Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?</u> by Bill Martin and Eric Carle is an excellent example of a predictable book. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><b>Rebus Reading</b> is another powerful strategy for assisting emergent readers with Concept of Word. This strategy has proven so effective that it "...is recommended as one that should be found in every classroom with emergent readers (National Center for Technology Innovation, 2004). Rebus is the combination of pictures <i>with</i> words either in conjunction or in place of the word. Rebuses are ideal for both emergent readers and struggling readers because they reduce the learning load on the reader (Woodcock, 1968.) Research conducted by Begy and Cahill (1978) found that the ability of kindergarten children to segment oral language into separate words <i>significantly increased</i> when they had used the Modified Rebus Reading Readiness Program (uses pictorial representatives of words) instead of a traditional reading readiness program. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The benefits of Rebus Reading and Repeated Reading of predictable text can and should be combined when working with emergent readers. In an effort to prepare our preschooler for the exciting and complex task of reading, I have created Sight Word Rainbow-Write Rebus Readers. They utilize predictable text as well as rebus in order to facilitate Concept of Word. Rainbow-writing with a die makes this a highly interactive and multisensory learning experience. For each new sight word and Rebus Reader we begin by reading it together. I read it aloud and track each word/picture with my finger. Next, I draw her attention to the sight word we are focusing on and tell her "The letters a-m spell the word am." Next, she uses her die and rolls one time for each page. The die shows her what three colors to rainbow-write. Last, she colors the pictures. Finally, she is very excited to show Mommy, Daddy, Grandma, Grandpa and anyone else who is around how she can "READ!" I always ask her to use her finger to track each word/picture. If your child or student is struggling with this, you can place small smiley stickers under each word/picture to help slow them down. Have them touch each sticker as they read each word/picture. You can gradually fade out the stickers. </span></div>

I can hardly believe how fast her first year went and I am beyond thankful that she has a second year of PreK because I am not ready to send her to Kindergarten:) We celebrated the last day of school by going to the movies to see Monsters University! It was sooo cute! It was her very first movie theater experience. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMkaxUNr9Lm7-LcCaLw_URpvxV34-foGssh069OvFh5NqOak4vg3opynX_0F3T-RB1WJyzbDMNt_xq9UBmuBaqFRKeBXSY_aWvTDyg4YDf8MPmwi_7kDvq9HjMQn5zv0j2L-ZSOpyz6Xg/s1600/Last+Day+of+School+2013+010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMkaxUNr9Lm7-LcCaLw_URpvxV34-foGssh069OvFh5NqOak4vg3opynX_0F3T-RB1WJyzbDMNt_xq9UBmuBaqFRKeBXSY_aWvTDyg4YDf8MPmwi_7kDvq9HjMQn5zv0j2L-ZSOpyz6Xg/s320/Last+Day+of+School+2013+010.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am very excited about starting the <a href="http://www.motherhoodonadime.com/gods-little-explorers-preschool-curriculum/" target="_blank">God's Little Explorers</a> Preschool Curriculum! I have not printed out all of the pages yet, but plan to do so and have it spiral bound at Staples like many other folks have done. It is an A to Z adventure of God's word. I actually LOVE the fact that the alphabet is not presented in order. The curriculum begins with letter "Xx" and the theme is God's Word is a Treasure. So a pirate/explorer theme works great! The first day I explained to our daughter that we were going to be looking for treasure together and showed her the treasure map I created.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHTeeHeavOJOnj230gdCQ7O7SMik89xDVV7S_ycaWifkuRMPemNnNwi22_G4Vxfaj1z2lOIU_Up167WrhM0ktX-AOrszE6g6H7UuAVX-HlEjfRHU23RzzHkERrC8CgZ479DP0MeUjWRD8/s1600/GLE+011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHTeeHeavOJOnj230gdCQ7O7SMik89xDVV7S_ycaWifkuRMPemNnNwi22_G4Vxfaj1z2lOIU_Up167WrhM0ktX-AOrszE6g6H7UuAVX-HlEjfRHU23RzzHkERrC8CgZ479DP0MeUjWRD8/s320/GLE+011.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we talked about how God's Word ~ the Bible ~ is a treasure map to help us find our way. Next, we read the Treasure Hunt story in the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0310726050/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0310726050&linkCode=as2&tag=chrysalispubl-20" target="_blank">The Jesus Storybook Bible</a> which is the parable from Matthew 13 about hidden treasure. On page 255 it states so perfectly that "God's treasure was his children. It was why Jesus had come into the world. To find God;s treasure." Isn't that a perfect picture for little ones? What better way to make this treasure hunt concrete than to dig for our own treasure!?! I hid some craft jewels in a bin of corn and she had to dig for her treasure. We also sorted them by shape and size and then picked out all of the hearts for a special project. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI6zTtrKzkYy4oG-bB0A-lUK07Dt1YGkycmIkeDXgaFrzR1FHfbF0hfeMINzj0rUO4877APs-TYKs13aT4UxWISGV82D4pPT9hv2mJ37sGE9vo5-Z57jNspInMqF9r0y8ipuh-aiQxXAo/s1600/GLE+010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI6zTtrKzkYy4oG-bB0A-lUK07Dt1YGkycmIkeDXgaFrzR1FHfbF0hfeMINzj0rUO4877APs-TYKs13aT4UxWISGV82D4pPT9hv2mJ37sGE9vo5-Z57jNspInMqF9r0y8ipuh-aiQxXAo/s320/GLE+010.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I explained to her that when people hide treasure they make a map so they can remember where they put it. They use an "X" to mark the spot where their treasure is hidden. God wants our hearts and he has an "X" to mark the spot of His greatest treasure ~ OUR HEARTS! We glued the hearts gems to an "X" and I mounted it to a page with the quote from her Storybook Bible.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZzdjj04799mbECZtdfD7LnNO-o-2bP4A9gzA5vsvONUxY3GkR9kgybIzwcwPNsiFzPtdLtQmTi6BCPBdbsj1tEoi2xDAmgueUOiSe9UQ2ywm5kWwg9W1OMdqDT0UDcG17_krlsR8lqec/s1600/GLE+044.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZzdjj04799mbECZtdfD7LnNO-o-2bP4A9gzA5vsvONUxY3GkR9kgybIzwcwPNsiFzPtdLtQmTi6BCPBdbsj1tEoi2xDAmgueUOiSe9UQ2ywm5kWwg9W1OMdqDT0UDcG17_krlsR8lqec/s320/GLE+044.JPG" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Speaking of the Letter X ~ I think it is so cool that we started with that letter! There is not a whole lot out there for poor letter X...everything is xylophone or x-ray, but HEY, you gotta work with what you have:) Here is what we did for X:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFS3Kfj6dJvZkMNsRUJrJ1e-IZBPK_GL0oZXWA3ifaYCZaiWALpk_qMd9ZLLBI1kSwOWFDiYmCgrjyVc9UDUJhGK5fsFL-eI5NF499-dvV1FdtxadGX_E8aTkAROvjHbyjSViYTY0emaw/s1600/Letter+X.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFS3Kfj6dJvZkMNsRUJrJ1e-IZBPK_GL0oZXWA3ifaYCZaiWALpk_qMd9ZLLBI1kSwOWFDiYmCgrjyVc9UDUJhGK5fsFL-eI5NF499-dvV1FdtxadGX_E8aTkAROvjHbyjSViYTY0emaw/s1600/Letter+X.png" height="230" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My focus for our daughter is on letter identification and sounds right now. I am not overly concerned with her writing...especially since she is getting Occupational Therapy at school to address this area. I do not want her to hate writing, so at home I <i><b><u>try </u></b></i>to not push her too hard in that area. Notice I said TRY...it is really hard as a teacher not to constantly attempt to correct her grip, etc. You can see from the pictures that we do a lot of Do-a-Dot, dot stickers, highlighting, cutting and pasting, as well as stickers. By the way ~ the book Jessica's X-Ray is really cute and includes real x-rays of various body parts. She really enjoyed it! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also talked with her about the words hunt, quest, and pursuit since many games utilize these words in the to refer to the same/similar concept. Of course, we did a ton of scavenger hunts this week! We did the treasure hunt in the corn that I mentioned earlier, we did an outdoor neighborhood nature hunt, and we played the game Puppy Pursuit by Melissa and Doug. This is an awesome game for preschoolers that really targets several skills at once while having fun:) Click on the picture to read about it on Amazon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really want to wrap up letter x and move on to the next week. We had two days when we were not able to work on our plans, so we got a few days behind. Letter A is sure to be fun! I had a Caramel Apple Party at the beginning of this school year and have a TON of apple things for us to explore. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you are also doing God's Little Explorers and have a blog, please let me know. I would love to follow your experience!</div>

Mostly, she will run for her life if there is anything with wings buzzing around her. It often makes her not want to stay outside and enjoy the outdoor activities she is engaged in. So, I decided I would try to desensitize her to bugs. First, I had to see exactly how fearful she was under various circumstances. I discovered that if the bug is on the other side of the window she is fine and will look at it and study it with some level of curiosity. When we are outside, she is also fine with ants (worms too) and caterpillars. So basically, I have it narrowed down to bugs buzzing around her - big or small. My first attempt at helping her get over her fear is ladybugs. We have been learning about life cycles, so this is the perfect time to introduce them. We took out several great books from the library. One of my favorite non-fiction books so far is Starting Life: Ladybug by Claire Lleewellyn. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<center>
<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=chrysalispubl-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&ref=ss_til&asins=1559718927" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;"></iframe></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
I purchased the Lady Bug Land by Insect Lore and it is so awesome! It has a magnifier at the top of the dome so you can observe the ladybugs closely. It is also pretty neat looking:)</center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
</center>
<center>
<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=toadallytots-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&ref=ss_til&asins=B000099Z8H" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;"></iframe></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
Next, I had to find some live ladybugs! Now, the Lady Bug Land comes with a certificate to order lady bugs and watch it through the life cycle, but I was more concerned with having our daughter exposed to the bugs as opposed to watching the life cycle. So I chose to order ladybugs. I was surprised that I could not find any locally; I ended up having to order them online through <a href="http://www.hayneedle.com/product/orconliveladybugs.cfm?source=pla&tid=ORGA004&adtype=pla&kw=&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=ORGA004&gclid=CPWo_9ixxrYCFYef4AodV20AFg" target="_blank">Hayneedle</a>! I didn't think they would be alive since they shipped from California and took four days to get here. However, they arrived today and they were alive! There are about 1500 in the tub. </center>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We put a handful in our Lady Bug Land and left the rest in the tub and put them in the refrigerator. I had no idea you could do that, but that is what the instructions said to do. Our daughter was so excited! It was awesome to see that look of fascination that is priceless on a child!</div>

<br />
<center style="text-align: left;">
Naturally, I have a ton of ladybug themed activities for us to work on :) The best part is they were all FREE! So, here is a glimpse at what we did and a list of fabulous freebies I have found. First, we played a cute little math game using this great math mat freebie from<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Ladybug-Math-Mat-Freebie" target="_blank"> Jennifer Hier</a>. I made the spots using black foam and a craft punch, but Jennifer provides spots in her freebie :) I also used a dice popper that we had from Burger King a while back. It has 1,2,3 and -1, -2, and -3. We each got ten spots and each had a wing/side. The first person to get rid of all of their spots won :)</center>

With our daughter off from school this week I have had the pleasure and challenge of keeping her entertained while trying to keep things educational. I am so proud of all the things she is learning in school and beginning sounds are really starting to click for her. I have been focusing on the letters that have a capital letter and lower case letter that are nearly identical. This week we have been working on Cc. We started out with some jewel counting use this great <a href="http://www.teachersnotebook.com/product/MelissaSchaper_Edlah/jewel-counting" target="_blank">FREEBIE</a> from <a href="http://www.teachersnotebook.com/shop/MelissaSchaper_Edlah" target="_blank">Edlah Preschool Resources</a>. We talked about how the word CROWN starts with the /c/ sound as does the word COUNT. Then she picked out the number of jewels needed for each crown and glued them on. <br />

FREEBIEValentine's Day has become so commercialized. It can be difficult to get your children to see beyond the candy hearts and valentines shared with friends and family. There is nothing wrong with these things ~ they are so much fun! But we may also want to focus our child's attention on LOVE and the real meaning as this term can be thrown around much too cavalierly. I created a Corinthians countdown to help our family focus on the popular Corinthians 13: 4-7 verse/passage in the Bible.<br />
<br />
I printed ours on magnetic printing paper, but you can print it on card stock and use Velcro as well. We also found a great book for children titled <u>Love is...</u><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u><br /></u></div>

<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=toadallytots-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&ref=ss_til&asins=0689866755" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;"></iframe></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
The illustrations are beautiful! More importantly, they display acts of TRUE Biblical LOVE :)</center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
<br /></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
Use the week leading up to Valentine's Day to break down this passage in the Bible and discuss ways to put it into action. When your child displays LOVE toward another - add a candy to the heart! </center>

Sorry for the lame EGG-spressions ;) So, let me introduce you to Education Eggs:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtC1ShBifh7eQkxMaZaP6sr6uwMHKpfV4qQLRrwKzK1nudx3A19UkC6G-1qV0ECD95y70_Bk8AdPxkj5OXrwkh1Gv8SmGgi4k_YbyUUTcevsZ-MA99LpA9iO35ndSEkV10YFgycUHVVKc/s1600/Got+Eggs.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtC1ShBifh7eQkxMaZaP6sr6uwMHKpfV4qQLRrwKzK1nudx3A19UkC6G-1qV0ECD95y70_Bk8AdPxkj5OXrwkh1Gv8SmGgi4k_YbyUUTcevsZ-MA99LpA9iO35ndSEkV10YFgycUHVVKc/s320/Got+Eggs.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmAa3qX0TMHU0BPzbpAGKGqTq1UVTJYkbg00joz2iAa-aKCIdWruQjtNubQLUmYj_2it-hOG8boynvKAUO8_oM7FQNDJxw9n90AB0i-ofjr5-EBRcJKFbDvA0UKpfngWc1Cq6_4E6p0uM/s1600/Education+Egg+Visual.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="390" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmAa3qX0TMHU0BPzbpAGKGqTq1UVTJYkbg00joz2iAa-aKCIdWruQjtNubQLUmYj_2it-hOG8boynvKAUO8_oM7FQNDJxw9n90AB0i-ofjr5-EBRcJKFbDvA0UKpfngWc1Cq6_4E6p0uM/s400/Education+Egg+Visual.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first edition I have created is the Initial Sounds Set. It comes with six Carton Cards with eggs depicting something that begins with each letter of the alphabet. You will, of course, need an egg carton as well as a dozen plastic eggs. The set also comes with "Egg Yolks" with all the letters on the alphabet. You can use a craft punch (1 and 1/2") to punch these out to save time (and this is less tedious). I glued my "yolk" onto a wooden craft chip, but you can just laminate it if you prefer. Here is the best part: You can differentiate the activity! So, if you have a student who is a novice with beginning letter sounds you can place your yolks/eggs in the order matching the Carton Card. Then each egg becomes a self-checker. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you have students who are developing the skill you can mix the eggs up in different places so they must open the egg and discover that the wrong letter is in the spot! Now they must find the egg with correct letter. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A recording sheet is included as well. Take a look on my TeachersNotebook shop <a href="http://www.teachersnotebook.com/product/dawndelz/education-eggs-initial-sounds-edition" target="_blank">HERE</a>!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Don't forget the BIG sales on Superbowl Sunday!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Don't get me wrong ~ we have our share of burdens, and heartache has not been a stranger to us, but overall, we are very blessed. I do not want our daughter to grow up feeling entitled to all that she has. This is something that weighs heavy on my heart. I want my daughter to be thankful for what she has and to always give thanks to God. What I am learning is that this is a something that I must teach her and model for her. In the beginning, I admit I thought my efforts were in vain and my words falling on deaf ears. But I am starting to see the results. Many mornings when we are leaving for preschool she will say "What a beautiful day God gave us Mommy!" It warms my heart to hear her acknowledge the blessings around her and, more importantly, give the thanks to God. However, she is onlt three and a half and there are so many moments when she is selfish and ungrateful. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I came across a great resource from the blog <a href="http://kidsbibledebjackson.blogspot.com/2012/11/i-thank-you-god-for-everything-book.html" target="_blank">Bible Fun for Kids</a> and although I absolutely LOVE her idea and her generous free resource, I needed to modify it a little to meet our needs and added Bible verses that were relevant to the page. One of my favorite pages she created was a page saying "Thank you God for my mouth." Her child put on lipstick and put kisses all over the paper! This is just too cute not to do :) Our daughter LOVED putting lipstick on, although she wasn't quite adept at kissing the paper LOL! After she kissed the page, we talked about the things she can do with her mouth and I wrote the things she told me. I also taught her about uplifting people with our words. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />

Another page that I thought was great from Bible Fun for Kids was the hand page. We traced her hand and then we read the book One Hand, Two Hands by Max Lucando:<br />

This book is PERFECT for little ones to learn to appreciate something they take for granted on a adaily basis ~ their hands! It talks about all the wonderful things you can do with your hands such as hug, help, wash, eat, and pray! I highly recommend this book! After we read the book we talked about all the things she can do with her hands I wrote them on the page for her.<br />

We did something similar for the page titled "Thank you God for me and all that I can do!" We read the book God Gave Us You by Lisa Tawn Bergren: </div>

This is a delightful story about a mama and papa bear and their little cub who was given to them by God (no real discussion of how the baby gets into the belly ~ so it is perfect for younger ones!) After reading the book, we wrote down all of things that she can do: count, dance, paint, sing, play, etc...</div>

Another page that is very interactive is the one titled "Thank you God for all the creatures of the earth." I cut out pictures of animals for her to glue on the page. For this page, we read another awesome title from Lisa Tawn Bergren ~ God Gave Us the World: </div>

<div align="left">
The prayer page: "Thank you God for hearing my prayers" is not interactive, but I think it is one of the most important pages. Notice I did not make the title "Thank you God for answering my prayers." Most children are not mature enough to understand that God is not a giant Santa Claus who will give them <em>everything</em> they want; I certianly don't want my daughter to get the wrong impression when her prayers for incosequential things go unanswered, so that is why I worded it that way. A great book to read about prayer is <u>This Little Prayer of Mine</u> by Anthony DeStefano.</div>

There are many other pages in this book/journal that I created, but the last one I want to share is the page titled "Thank you God for my clothes" just because it is fun! Another blogger, Stacy from <a href="http://shareandremember.blogspot.com/2012/12/cozy-sweater-collages.html" target="_blank">Share and Remember</a> posted the most adorable project! Please click on the picture below to go over and read about her <a href="http://shareandremember.blogspot.com/2012/12/cozy-sweater-collages.html" target="_blank">Cozy Sweater Collage</a>! this is what I plan to do for the clothing page!</div>

As both a teacher and a mommy I just can't wrap my mind around it. I find myself weeping at random moments throughout the day. Church was my refuge this morning. As is the case when any tragedy befalls. people cry out and question how God could allow such evil to happen. One thing I know for certain is that God uses <strong>ALL</strong> for good and He will use this tragedy for good. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">All I can do is pray ~ ceaselessly. There is power in prayer. I made an angel ornament with the names of all of the victims. I applied an idea from Pinterest by printing out the names with their DOB and cutting them into thin strips Next, I curled the paper around a pencil and then placed them into a clear ornament. This ornament will help me to keep these victims and their families in my prayers this Christmas season. </span><br />

You can make on by picking up a swing top garbage can - I purchased this one at Target for $10. You will also need a large old lady head! Don't worry ~ I have downloaded one for you <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JnySfWndndWzxK1I4Z48RJoVsUM9NykoLFYRnmvvT3Y/edit" target="_blank">HERE</a> :) Cut out the mouth area and ModPodge her to the can opening. Next, find some props for each story, or print some of your own. <a href="http://www.scrappindoodles.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&keyword=granny&x=0&y=0" target="_blank">Scrappin' Doodles</a> has great old lady clip art to go with most of the stories. <br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">I think the games are the most exciting part of this pack for me :) We are hosting an Elf on the Shelf Shoebox Shindig for our daughter's preschool kiddos and I can't wait to do the Elf Scavenger Hunt with them! What is an Elf Scavenger Hunt? Well, I am glad you asked! Just print out the elves on card stock and laminate them so you can use them year after year. We also do a Ghost Hunt and a Turkey Hunt, so I use paint stirrers ~ they were generously given to me for free at our local Lowes ~ and I use velcro to attach them to the sticks. This way I can swap out the "object" of our hunt all year. </span></span></div>

By the way ~ if you are a big fan of The Elf on the Shelf you will definitely want to get the movie if you haven't already. It is ADORABLE! It is perfect for preschoolers too since it is only about half and hour. Our daughter begs to watch it over and over until Mommy can't take it anymore ;) I highly recommend it!</div>

The main character elf in the movie is named Chippey and he is such a cutie! I had to make a game for him based on the popular games all over Pinterest: Don't Eat Tom!, Don't Eat Fred!, Don't Eat ___________! I created Don't Eat Chippey!</center>

But now it is time for an ELF LOVE FREEBIE!!! This is an interactive learning game that is sure to be a hit with your little ones! What could be more fun than throwing snowballs indoors!?! Print out the Elf Shape Cards on card stock and laminate for durability. Glue a clothespin to the back. Now you can attach it to the back of a bucket or basket. Children take turns throwing snowballs into the buckets. When they are done they count how many snowballs are in each shape. Lastly, they complete the graph. Our daughter had a blast!</center>

Sometimes I fall short of what I desire and we only get to read 3-4 nights a week. Every morning we read our devotions and this is becoming a habit and a beautiful part of our morning routine as we snuggle in bed together. I often wonder, however, if she is really understanding the stories we read. So many of the words are beyond her. I try to use language that is easier for her to understand, but I still feel I fall short in getting the message across. My hope is that these readings will at least familiarize her with the people in the Bible, but most important, to Jesus. I also fear that she gets the wrong message when she hears how often God punished people who disobeyed ~ specifically in the Old Testament stories. I do not want her foundational understanding of God to be: Obey=Good and God accepts you; Disobey=Bad and God is mad at you. <br />
<br />
I am using the best children's Bible's available (and we probably own seven children's Bibles!) and I cross-reference them and chose the one that explains the story in the most appropriate manner for her age: BTW ~ she is three and a half. I also love printable mini-books from <a href="http://www.christianpreschoolprintables.com/MiniBooks.html" target="_blank">Christian Preschool Printables</a>. <br />
<br />
Ironically, at this point in this blog entry, I went to put our daughter to bed. My husband and I read with her and then I reread the Bible story of Abraham with her. She remembered Abraham and Sarah's son's name! I guess she is listening! :)<br />
<br />
Today, we talked about the Tower of Babel. This is a hard concept to grasp for a preschooler. While they can understand "a tall building" it is much harder to explain people feeling proud of themselves. Language is also a hard concept if they only know English. I printed the minibook from Christian Preschool Printables and after we read the story in her Bible we read the minibook. Then we baked some brownies! I told her that the brownies were like the bricks that the people made. Once the brownies were cooked I cut them into "bricks" and we built a brownie tower. Then we had fun knocking it down and eating them! <br />

I admit, however, that I am a Pin-aholic, blog-aholic, TpT-aholic and a Teachers Notebook-aholic. What does this mean? Well, it means that I see so many incredible resources that I spend a lot of time and money printing , laminating, and organizing these materials. I prefer to store them in a manner that affords me the luxury of using them multiple times. The best method I have found is utilzing paper protectors and laminating things that are more suitable for lamination. For example, I store all of the songs, visual discrimation, and magnet pages, grid pages, and coutning pages in page protectors. When our daughter uses them I let her use a dry erase marker, dry erase crayons, or we place them on a cookie tray and she uses her magnets. <br />

It has been such a long time since I have posted. We have moved into a new home and I am now a SAHM for our 3 and a half year old firecracker. She started preschool in September, and I am so thankful that it is going MUCH smoother than we anticipated. She was having awful separation anxiety this summer after our move and I thought for sure she was going to go bonkers when I tried to leave her at school. I worked on it for weeks with her: we role played that she was going to school and I was the teacher (pretty easy to play a teacher when you are one ~ LOL) and then she would pretend to be the mommy and I would cry and beg her not to leave and she would reassure me :) We also read books about school every day and we also "read" a photo book I created of her classroom (thankfully her teacher allowed me to come in ahead of time and take pictures of the classroom). The first day was tough, but not outrageous ~ just natural. The second day there were less tears. The first Monday, she cried again. Since then she has only cried once! Thank God! Prayers and practice both paid off :)<br />
<br />
So, one of the many skills they are working on is name recognition. I have also been working hard with her on recognizing the numerals 1-10. She recognizes most of them, but not with mastery. She knows her letters much better than her numerals. Since I have been practicing numerals with her we have been doing many number order puzzles included in the awesome PreK Packs by the incredible ladies at <a href="http://www.2teachingmommies.com/" target="_blank">2TeachingMommies</a> and <a href="http://totallytots.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">TotallyTots</a> as well as a number of other great resources. The hard part about these puzzles is they don't stay in place. I did Velcro with one set, but it was a bit bulky and more cumbersome than I wanted. Since we use magnets for so many of our resources I decided to simply print the puzzles onto magnet paper! Tonight, I created a Name Puzzle for Isabella with her picture and name. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXjmVEB7WgqeGWldNysPB9SipNuLkDk7aXrJo5S5uJzOcjPSjXxl3cg0MWwtSBK56jD49HaRav5bWXNn_6tLYY36N-RreCJMim-0f6gAphA-2v8tlEhei16UyfsIyjjwG7mu-PWHKvWLQ/s1600/Name+Puzzle+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXjmVEB7WgqeGWldNysPB9SipNuLkDk7aXrJo5S5uJzOcjPSjXxl3cg0MWwtSBK56jD49HaRav5bWXNn_6tLYY36N-RreCJMim-0f6gAphA-2v8tlEhei16UyfsIyjjwG7mu-PWHKvWLQ/s320/Name+Puzzle+002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It was really very easy! First, I opened a new Word doc. I changed the orientation to landscape and set the margins to minimal. I inserted a photo of Isabella and centered it and made it as wide as could fit the page. <br />
<br />
Next, I created a Text Box using the Draw Your Own Text Box selection and covered the entire picture. I made sure there was no shading/fill or border color. <br />
<br />
Now I was able to add a Table inside the text box. I made the table with 8 columns and 2 rows. I adjusted the table so that the bottom boxes were small just for the letters of her name. Depending on the background colors of your photo, you may or may not want to add shading to the cells. I made my shading a light gray and used black. I found a font that didn't have the funny "a" like this one :) <br />
<br />
Finally, I printed it onto the magnetic paper, trimmed all the borders, cut the columns and it is now laying on a cookie sheet for her to play with in the morning! From now on, all of our puzzles will be printed in magnetic paper.<br />
<br />

It is simple to create and can be used for the alphabet or numbers. I created a SlideShare to show you all the pictures and ways that I created my eggs. Basically, the idea is to put a letter on the top half of a plastic egg (like letter A) and a letter on the bottom half of the egg (for this example, letter C) and have the child tell you what comes in between those two letters: B. When he or she opens the egg, there is a little chick with the letter B! What other concepts can be practiced in this manner?</span><br />

So, I saw an paper plate fish tank craft and thought how else could this be done? When shopping in the dollar store I came across disposable tin pans with clear lids and had a light bulb moment :) AHA! This would be a perfect "fish tank" for Pickle! So, this is my Seuss-tastic fish tank, but you will want to involve your little pickles by having them create their own fish. You can give them fish outlines or fish that you precut and let them craft to their heart's content with whatever medium you prefer: paints, watercolors, crayons, markers, stickers, jewels, etc... Whatever you do make sure you do not forgot the most important THING (nope, not Thing 1 or Thing 2), but rather Thing 3: Read <u>One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish</u> ;) </span><br />

It is one of the best children's books and our daughter loves it when I blubber on and on pretending to be bear when he wakes up :) This is my favorite tot pack right now, but I'll let you in on a secret: Good Night Gorilla is coming soon and that will surely be my favorite too! If you want to check out the Bear Snores On Tot Pack just click the picture above :) THANKS!</span></div>Dawn De Lorenzohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11751046102495240217noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2641085358449594790.post-85330369374828234572012-02-17T18:34:00.000-08:002012-02-17T18:34:29.067-08:00More Fine Motor Fun!<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Hi everyone! I want to share with you two neat fine motor ideas that I created for our daughter. I recently did a linky party in which you ended the phrase "You know you are a teacher when..." Well, here is mine:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK4vi1UqJ9fr0xJLlLGYyTgP-KwXkBvMtthQE7ah4vhZcwkq6JikopK9ACXgtwLk5qBNq6skrqB4O6qNAWTch4gL1Ed_qWMsV8637ujcJ9MI90KdCEx_da0HL2ZJyqMZt6McvdrZTP32Y/s1600/Teacher+Linky.jpg.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK4vi1UqJ9fr0xJLlLGYyTgP-KwXkBvMtthQE7ah4vhZcwkq6JikopK9ACXgtwLk5qBNq6skrqB4O6qNAWTch4gL1Ed_qWMsV8637ujcJ9MI90KdCEx_da0HL2ZJyqMZt6McvdrZTP32Y/s320/Teacher+Linky.jpg.png" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">That is me! So thanks to all the great sales and clearance sections at Michaels and Target I was able to create some more simple fine motor fun! I found these adorable felt cups. I put foam numbers on them and now Pickle can place the appropriate number of marshmallows on her hot chocolate! </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1Ob8mVJcSJjlpdKLtUtRmixCdYc0ipCE22hd_TpsriJAOygfSE5qD-Z7An696B4bZnbCdm-jHcMb5Ndx7ZesjVdQVypWBhq7Y0Cu1xuXXIW0HNaFyc_zG_rsGSchjhijdXKAmkOymEV4/s1600/Games+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1Ob8mVJcSJjlpdKLtUtRmixCdYc0ipCE22hd_TpsriJAOygfSE5qD-Z7An696B4bZnbCdm-jHcMb5Ndx7ZesjVdQVypWBhq7Y0Cu1xuXXIW0HNaFyc_zG_rsGSchjhijdXKAmkOymEV4/s320/Games+005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Since Easter is coming up I have jelly beans on my mind ~ LOL! I saw these cute egg platters at the party store and made a dice game to reinforce numbers and colors. I used puffy paint on the bottom of the egg platter to make dots. Next, place the jelly beans in the center tray. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQSw5cNp9_FsKYruXsryCSPm_OK8Nji5uhji8Q-1cAqdvkugssggdcVzdGWEUHKG8x5_M8BfrZZd9X6v095Qt3odDh-r1y0gR06kXaG-t6NffHyiI742j_4bGC8TdJ0DitOh99LSipl1U/s1600/Games+009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQSw5cNp9_FsKYruXsryCSPm_OK8Nji5uhji8Q-1cAqdvkugssggdcVzdGWEUHKG8x5_M8BfrZZd9X6v095Qt3odDh-r1y0gR06kXaG-t6NffHyiI742j_4bGC8TdJ0DitOh99LSipl1U/s320/Games+009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I have photo cube blocks that I purchased from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YQS9TW/ref=oh_o01_s01_i02_details" target="_blank">Amazon</a> that can be customized for anything! The website <a href="http://www.educationcubes.com/" target="_blank">Education Cubes</a> is a members-only site that has inserts...so I printed the number cards from there. Then I printed colored jelly beans from <a href="http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/blog/2010/05/j-is-for-jelly-bean-alternative.html" target="_blank">Confessions of a Homeschooler</a>'s J is for Jellybean unit on cardstock and put those in the cubes too.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZhLBNuSh6pPTVmyoayGRCVxuLpAh6WfjjaRLdArDcz9Z4y2BTV2lowla83XdsJ15nzMeBoOQv-85XcTdilDIMnPhyGCxYjrzM5IOP_Eru3p9nhcW2TgITpZnskYnp1nAF1ys25OF1N18/s1600/Cubes+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZhLBNuSh6pPTVmyoayGRCVxuLpAh6WfjjaRLdArDcz9Z4y2BTV2lowla83XdsJ15nzMeBoOQv-85XcTdilDIMnPhyGCxYjrzM5IOP_Eru3p9nhcW2TgITpZnskYnp1nAF1ys25OF1N18/s320/Cubes+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Now when Pickle rolls the dice she will get a color and a number. She will have to find that number jelly beans in that specific color and transfer them to the egg tray matching the number shown. You can use easy-grip tweezers or let your little one use their fingers :)</span></div>Dawn De Lorenzohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11751046102495240217noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2641085358449594790.post-87206712007880671742012-02-10T19:09:00.000-08:002012-02-10T19:09:39.336-08:00Five Beginner Games for Twos and Threes<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">If you are like most parents you want your child's play to be fun and stimulating for him/her and YOU too ;) Our daughter is an only child and presently her favorite playmates are Mommy, Daddy, Grandma, Grandpa, her aunt and the dog. For the time being, WE are her primary playmates, so it helps to have some options when it comes to play. I really enjoy games and when introduced properly they can be great fun as well as a learning experience for your child. Our Pickle is almost three years old, so it is still hard for her to attend to a game for a great length of time. I have looked for games that are stimulating, entertaining, interesting, educational and not very competitive. Here are a few that I like. I will share my own personal pros and cons, but ultimately you have to decide what is best for your child and family.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">#1.) Ravensburger Teddy Mix & Match</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYr71aKF8NHmkfcztRVbxHFW1s69QJTA62pyDbhjf4GcVVIDswAuxvFLK9xD2k3RE8eJoJxXjTYbE4vTzbt4Zt3yAWi8M_jRbwPBUPqYyFbNwYpd1ViaUm2BmzhBkajytgLPLOS0mixq0/s1600/teddy+mix+and+match.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYr71aKF8NHmkfcztRVbxHFW1s69QJTA62pyDbhjf4GcVVIDswAuxvFLK9xD2k3RE8eJoJxXjTYbE4vTzbt4Zt3yAWi8M_jRbwPBUPqYyFbNwYpd1ViaUm2BmzhBkajytgLPLOS0mixq0/s1600/teddy+mix+and+match.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This is the BEST first game for a child in the two year old range. First of all, it is adorable! Second, it is very sturdy chipboard. The pictures are high quality and engaging to little ones. This is Pickle's "go to" game. You can adapt the difficulty just by adjusting how you play it. Right now, we lay them all out face-up and pick one bear at a time and ask her to find the match. As she gets older we can begin to use it as a memory matching game. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6Hsj65cEanmC8sL2E5ZGY195IiQJPeT6hzbG-XxgApiSi-zjASZOH1ORAP1Fu2fI0pZjOoBEAzI51KkQZ7hR7L1wQRnijGDNhXiIR_Sj6KcuwmoXnAIADDsKIZvUIfGGaoZavMpMQW5Y/s1600/Bella+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6Hsj65cEanmC8sL2E5ZGY195IiQJPeT6hzbG-XxgApiSi-zjASZOH1ORAP1Fu2fI0pZjOoBEAzI51KkQZ7hR7L1wQRnijGDNhXiIR_Sj6KcuwmoXnAIADDsKIZvUIfGGaoZavMpMQW5Y/s320/Bella+005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">#2.) Bear Hugs by iPlay</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBtcNe0yFxu8AkJcQzbpcZ3AxFwhuY4BewaZma87NhkOSEIG7tImGu5GmQ4lCMtWxPgcdajduuBVfR2qT-l27LknFqDIv8j_09uSI1PTn14OcU_iqzttZVfWMGw3XQf9Vt5z281uKQv2U/s1600/bear+hugs.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBtcNe0yFxu8AkJcQzbpcZ3AxFwhuY4BewaZma87NhkOSEIG7tImGu5GmQ4lCMtWxPgcdajduuBVfR2qT-l27LknFqDIv8j_09uSI1PTn14OcU_iqzttZVfWMGw3XQf9Vt5z281uKQv2U/s1600/bear+hugs.png" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This happens to be on sale at Amazon right now for $8.98, so if you decide you want to try it I would get it while the price is right! This is another adorable game and ideal as a first beginner's game. In this matching game you are matching a Mama Bear to her cub. The level of difficulty is only slightly more challenging than the Ravensburger bear matching game because a few of the bears have similar features. When the player makes a match he or she hugs the plush teddy bear and keeps it until the other player makes a match. Once again, you can simply lay the cards face-up in the beginning, but as your child develops you can make it more of a card game where they pick a card and find the match and eventually move to a complete memory matching game.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAkGDPbyOWXfEUT-u3lzcdMoVdqSd9F67QZzzE_zxxZ6XCIcUF4-HitHd4_G_v3zGuFrqjTR5oQ0Yzgucm1k5XdCMaJDmdK4L_1mGuAemtLcyonzdSzJqojSB4TtiSRghW8OLKtP35J1M/s1600/Bella+009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAkGDPbyOWXfEUT-u3lzcdMoVdqSd9F67QZzzE_zxxZ6XCIcUF4-HitHd4_G_v3zGuFrqjTR5oQ0Yzgucm1k5XdCMaJDmdK4L_1mGuAemtLcyonzdSzJqojSB4TtiSRghW8OLKtP35J1M/s320/Bella+009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

Lakeshore Shape Sorting Center</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK2mkCr35RYIIgG7tZ3Rpher0-uIszVRvUozNX0opZD2sNE9ECEC_XnQzk1DQyKL2TcMKByrtqVwX95C-_onJh6FHbaEHcSRfY6blKmNl5-Poi66xX4n-X7lFz6yef6ItOyuzcJdCrgmI/s1600/Shape+Matching+014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK2mkCr35RYIIgG7tZ3Rpher0-uIszVRvUozNX0opZD2sNE9ECEC_XnQzk1DQyKL2TcMKByrtqVwX95C-_onJh6FHbaEHcSRfY6blKmNl5-Poi66xX4n-X7lFz6yef6ItOyuzcJdCrgmI/s320/Shape+Matching+014.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This is not really a game but an activity. This one is very worthy of mention since, as a teacher I see tremendous opportunity for language development as well as one-to-one correspondence which is basis for good number sense. There are eight shape mats. On one side the mat is blank other than having the name of the shape. On the other side it has items for the child to find and match using the pieces. The objects are everyday items like a present, pie, pizza, button, etc. so this is a fabulous language building activity if you ask your child questions about each of the objects. You can also gradually have your child start to classify the items based on other characteristics and attributes as they get older: color only, function, foods, etc.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">#4.) Old McDonald Pop n' Match Game</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF7SmcizEk7J7PB7f2juHyN_EmBu43iEBWlZQAVbQuXxLmb_0pcKCOX5GkaxupaGIuFt_d6RWILPRVKEFk4tlLxefzJy_kdPZhxcYjXqsSS-Vbs15auG1wsvnCuSxHFsKLRiXOZzXCstU/s1600/Old+Mac+Pop+Game.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF7SmcizEk7J7PB7f2juHyN_EmBu43iEBWlZQAVbQuXxLmb_0pcKCOX5GkaxupaGIuFt_d6RWILPRVKEFk4tlLxefzJy_kdPZhxcYjXqsSS-Vbs15auG1wsvnCuSxHFsKLRiXOZzXCstU/s1600/Old+Mac+Pop+Game.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I like this one the best out of the pop n' match collection. It is a simple game: pop the popper and it will show you are farm animal. You take a chipboard animal and place it on your board on top of the match. So, if you pop a pig you pick a pig piece and put it on the pig on your board. The one thing I dislike about this game is that it has a -1 side on the cube. If you pop a -1 you have to give back a piece. This is very difficult for a young child to do. There are a few other games in this line: Hickory Dickory Dock (we do not have that one) and Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes as well, but that one is too hard for Pickle right now.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">#5.) Oh Rats! by Discovery Toys</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I don't think Discovery Toys is around anymore. That is a shame because when I taught preschool they had some of the best games. One that I still have is Oh Rats! It is a color puzzle matching game! </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhv2r8ILYfJGfcAAl-9BYpKt_JYym-n11d4zAPG4hSNNOriTD-vCQ3-3xkhyphenhyphenOjGI5f1hBNCZ6tiVtZP7RLDm0VsRKWdGtmpG5_S84TL4lTvA-8NLnJNuvpPE39KfCjvu6HDinKHP4pP-CM/s1600/Bella+025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhv2r8ILYfJGfcAAl-9BYpKt_JYym-n11d4zAPG4hSNNOriTD-vCQ3-3xkhyphenhyphenOjGI5f1hBNCZ6tiVtZP7RLDm0VsRKWdGtmpG5_S84TL4lTvA-8NLnJNuvpPE39KfCjvu6HDinKHP4pP-CM/s320/Bella+025.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs827B1vNoaO93_ehSq94FVcfclkmEbtIPqnhDkXcXLQ7GVCnKArdQx04qvrqXx4BPhjzuSqif2klBdHIqyzkgmSizUQ2NssVfSgC_mL07SFkmk-WGCmm-4iqu6hvWsVOLT9USumyWdqI/s1600/Bella+030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs827B1vNoaO93_ehSq94FVcfclkmEbtIPqnhDkXcXLQ7GVCnKArdQx04qvrqXx4BPhjzuSqif2klBdHIqyzkgmSizUQ2NssVfSgC_mL07SFkmk-WGCmm-4iqu6hvWsVOLT9USumyWdqI/s320/Bella+030.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I help Pickle a bit by setting the puzzle pieces for her puzzle next to her. When she spins I tell her to look for a piece that is that color and then we figure out where it goes. </span></div><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">There are certain books that are loved and cherished more than others in our home. <u>Goodnight Gorilla</u> by Peggy Rathman has been one of our daughter's favorites since she was a baby. A new favorite is <u>Rosie's Walk</u> by Pat Hutchins. I was over-the-moon when I found both of these on YouTube! Goodnight Gorilla is extremely well done and our daughter now wants to watch it every night before bed. Another favorite (of mine as well!) is <u>Going on a Bear Hunt</u> by Michael Rosen. The animated version is awesome! I created a playlist on YouTube of some of the great ones I have found to date: The Mitten, Owl Babies, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Are You My Mother, and more! Check out the list <a href="http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL74C3D75AB3C631C1&feature=plcp" target="_blank">HERE</a> and please let me know if you know of any other great videos of classic picture books :)</span><br />

My daughter and I collected a ton of acorns at her Nonna’s house in the fall. I have seen some very crafty people make felted acorns that are beautiful, but mine are simply made with pom-poms. I put several squirrel clip art images on a page and printed them on card stock. You can laminate them if you want them to last </span><span style="font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: Georgia; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: Georgia; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J</span><span style="font-family: "Georgia","serif";"> Then I glued matching pom-poms in the squirrels hands. Last, I glued the squirrels to toilet paper tubes. Finally, you stand them in a cupcake pan and VOILA! You have an adorable fine motor “game” for your little one to practice matching colors while honing his or her fine motor skills! <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia","serif";">This is versatile in that you can use cupcake liners rather than a pan or you can even use an egg carton if you want to just stick the little squirrels in there…there is just less room so the child will only be able to transfer one or two acorns into each hole.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: "Georgia","serif";"><br />
